History:

The B.A.A.N.N. Theatre Centre was founded in 1979 by a co-opperative of six independent theatre companies - Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Autumn Leaf Theatre, AKA Performance Interface, Necessary Angel and Nightwood Theatre. It was incorporated as a non-profit in 1981, with registered charitable status. By the mid-1980's the six companies left, and the Theatre Centre remained to assist other emerging artists and groups. In 1984 The Theatre Centre established its R&D (Research & Development) program and became the leading proponent for theatrical exploration in the city.

In the past, The Theatre Centre was extremely successful in developing unique and innovative works of art by way of its contributions of a venue, equipment and senior artistic and administrative staff. It's productions redefined theatre practices and provided unique and innovative work.

The Theatre Centre has co-produced a number of highly successful and widely recognized productions, garnering over twenty Dora nominations and awards in its twenty-six year history.

R&D program
R&D is the research and development phase of The Theatre Centre's new work program. Five Resident Companies receive up to three non-consecutive weeks per year in the space for up to two years, and administrative and artistic support throughout. This program is national in scope. The Theatre Centre is committed to producing the work that is developed by the program.

BANG!
Audiences pay what they can for an evening of low-tech cabaret. A BANG! may be a short reading from a play in development, a short theatrical dance, a visual installation piece, or a musical number. Anything goes. Artists present work in its infancy. A curator is chosen for each BANG! by the artistic director. There are four-six BANG!'s a year.
