NEW HOME for The Theatre Centre
Finally, after more than 30 years of renting spaces across Toronto, The Theatre Centre will have a permanent new home.
As one of the City’s oldest performing arts collectives – that has been forced to move seven times in its 31-year history – The Theatre Centre’s new home will provide an extraordinary opportunity for the City of Toronto.
Our new home will allow The Theatre Centre to continue to serve as an arts incubator by providing emerging and established artists with the facilities, funding, mentorship, profile and sense of community to enable new work to be created, explored and developed.
We will return a magnificent historic building to the public; provide an innovative space for artistic creativity to flourish; balance the gentrification of the Queen Street West neighbourhood; and protect an area of the city that has been recognized as having one of the highest concentrations of artists in Canada.
The building’s stunning grand façade will remain, while innovative ways to adapt the internal space will be utilized to create a beautiful and accessible theatre, rehearsal hall, multi-purpose area and café.
We are in the quiet stages of an initial $5 Million Capital Campaign to renovate the Carnegie Library, which will become our new home. Renovation of The Carnegie Library will commence in 2012 and be open for The Theatre Centre productions in the Fall of 2013.
We will be updating and sharing some exciting announcements about our progress in the coming weeks.
This is a very exciting moment for us, for you and for Toronto’s Queen West arts community.
