Community Message Board: FEAST at XPACE – tickets on sale Dec 8

Tickets for Toronto’s first ever FEAST (Funding Emerging Arts with Sustainable Tactics) event is happening Sunday, January 16, 2011 at XPACE Cultural Centre from 6-10 PM. Tickets on sale Dec 8.

What it is:
A sliding scale dinner and funding event, FEAST invites artists and groups to propose projects taking place in the Toronto community. For only $20-25 or $10 for students (with valid student card) you will get a 3 course vegetarian dinner, beverages, beer (for those of legal drinking age), and a ballot.

Diners will vote on a variety of proposed artist projects. At the end of the dinner, the artist or group whose proposal receives the most number of votes will be awarded funds, collected through the entrance fees, to produce their project. The artist or group will be invited back to the next FEAST to present their completed project.

While the recommended ticket prices are between $20-25 regular price and $10 for students, the event works on the basis of the more that people can share, the larger the grants we can provide. FEAST Toronto is in its infancy. With your support we hope to see this event continue to grow.

How it works:
1. Buy a ticket for dinner on Sunday, January 16th, 2011 at XPACE Cultural Centre
2. Enjoy dinner and conversation with all of your friends and community
3. Over the course of dinner artists present project proposals for your consideration
4. Everyone votes for which project they would like to fund
5. The project with the most votes is funded from the money raised from ticket sales. (As well, the student project with the most votes will be awarded with the XPACE student grant.)

FEAST is generously co-presented by XPACE Cultural Centre, and sponsored by A Space Gallery and Fuse Magazine.

Tickets are available starting December 8 at XPACE Cultural Centre, 58 Ossington Avenue, or by contacting Amber Landgraff and Deborah Wang at feast.toronto@gmail.com. We accept cash only.

Community Message Board: Andrew Penner performs at The Music Gallery, Dec 9

Andrew Penner (The Theatre Centre Residency Artist) performs in his band SUNPARLOUR PLAYERS on Thursday December 9 at The Music Gallery. All proceeds go to the Parkdale Food Bank.

The Sunparlour Players are a multi-instrumental trio based in Toronto. They have been entertaining the masses with their intense brand of rootsy, bluesy, foot-stomping, soul-surging rawk.

Originally hailing from a Mennonite community near Leamington, Ontario, frontman Andrew Penner sings like a man with gospel conviction, while pounding it out on the kick drum and playing the banjo, guitar, or electric bass. Able accompanists Dennis Van Dine and Michael “Rosie” Rosenthal duke it out on an arsenal of instruments, including their own drums, a glockenspiel, keyboard, accordion and the clarinet.

Community Message Board: Cooking Fire Theatre Festival is now accepting proposals.

Cooking Fire Theatre Festival are now accepting proposals to their fantastic week long fest. It’s a great event. Details below….

The Cooking Fire Theatre Festival is an annual week-long event (June 22-26, 2011) celebrating theatre, food and public space that has been held in Toronto’s Dufferin Grove Park each June since 2004. Delicious, affordable organic meals from the park’s wood-fired community bake ovens are served alongside an evening of pay-what-you-can outdoor theatre performed by local, national and international artists. The festival is an ideal venue for independent artist-run companies creating original, ambitious outdoor theatre. They present work that draws on a range of forms, including physical theatre, puppetry, choral singing, live music, clown, street theatre and storytelling.

They are looking for:

* new site-specific pieces created for the festival itself, as well as those that are adapted and re-worked for this context.

* They accept applications for pieces ranging in length from 10-40 minutes.

* While all productions should accommodate an all ages audience, they are greatly interested in outdoor work that is thematically complex and geared more towards adults.

Deadline for submissions: December 15, 2010
