TALKIES, a showing of Zodiac, featuring a discussion with film critic Geoff Pevere

The Theatre Centre is happy to host TALKIES, a monthly public event curated by Mark Cauchi and Azed Majeed. In a casual atmoshphere, we screen a film, listen to an informal talk about it by an engaging adn informed speaker, and then have an open Q&A and discussion.

TALKIES is starting up again on Monday September 19 at a new location, THE THEATRE CENTRE, located at 1087 Queen St. W (at Dovercourt).

We’ll be showing the police thriller ZODIAC (2007) by David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, and the forthcoming Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), and we’re honoured that GEOFF PEVERE, one of Canada’s foremost film and culture critics, will be doing the presentation. For more on this presentation, see the attached abstract and visit our website.

Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the event will start at 7 pm sharp. We will have to be more strict about our timing in our new venue, so be sure to show up on time if you don’t want to miss any of the film.

In other news, as you can tell TALKIES has a new email address (talkiesinfo@gmail.com) and a new website (http://talkiestoronto.weebly.com). The website includes information about our past and upcoming events, including the bios of our speakers, posters and abstracts for the talks, trailers and links to information about the films, and other stuff. Please check it out and feel free to let others know about it.

So come on out, have a drink, watch a film, hear a stimulating talk, and engage in lively discussion.

Peter and the Wolf

The Theatre Centre is proud to host Theatre Rusticle’s production of PETER AND THE WOLF

I caught the show last night and loved it.  I’ve seen four works by Theatre Rusticle and each one has been unique, but Peter and the Wolf is my most favorite thus far. Congratulations to Allyson McMackon and the team of performers and musicians in the show. The music sounds gorgeous in the space.

We all remember hearing this, “early one morning, Peter opened the gate and went out into the big, green meadow”. And we all listened in joy and fear as a young boy named Peter faced a big, grey wolf in the meadow on day. Inspired by Sergei Prokofiev’s 1936 work for young people, Theatre Rusticle is pleased to bring you a new look at a classic tale.

Set on the eve of Peter’s death, a wolf comes to visit one last time. Over the course of the night and through flashbacks and memory, Peter and the Wolf trace the lives they have lived from the day of their births, to the day they met and Peter let the Wolf go rather than take him to the hell of the zoo. The play looks at the final moments of one’s life while celebrating the fullness of each heartbeat. It draws a parallel between a man and a regal animal, illuminating lives that are not so different, the struggle to grow and change in the face of rigid society and the harshness of life.

Theatre Creators’ Reserve: The Theatre Centre is now accepting applications

The Theatre Centre has been chosen as a recommendor for funding by the Ontario Arts Council under its Theatre Creators’ Reserve Program. As part of this program, individual professional artists and collectives can apply for funding directly to The Theatre Centre using an official OAC procedure. The program will support creators in the creation of new work.

Please continue reading to find out about The Theatre Centre’s application criteria and guidelines.
Submissions must be mailed to Jennifer Tarver, c/o The Theatre Centre, Suite 100, 1087 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON M6J 1H3. Deadline for applications November 1, 2011

Click here to download the application form; Theatre Creators’ Reserve Program Criteria and Eligibility Criteria; and the list of other recommendors and their priorities and deadlines.

The Theatre Centre’s Criteria and Procedure:
Artistic Criteria
The criteria we will use to select recipents of the grant are the following:
- Artists in the early stages of their career.
- Interdisciplinary artists, creators that use space and a myriad of disciplines to advance a theatrical idea.
- Collaboratively based development.
- Exciting, innovative, rigorous talent.
- We are looking for an inherently theatrical idea that absolutely needs space for its development.

Procedure:
The Artistic Director, Franco Boni and Associate Director, Jennifer Tarver, will vet all applications and meet with those candidates that address The Theatre Centre artistic criteria and have artistic merit. A decision regarding selection of artists and allocation of funds will be made. Allocation of funds will be based on the nature of required resources, number of people involved and availability of funds.

Applications to The Theatre Centre to include:
- 1-page proposal describing the project and how it fits into The Theatre Centre’s programming aesthetic (a description of the idea, statement describing how the idea fits our criteria, a brief outline of the intended development process, an indication of how the money will be used).
- Artist biography or Resume of key Artists.
- Signed OAC form x 3 copies – click here to download the form (scroll to the bottom of the page to find the form)

The Theatre Centre is interested in helping artists who fit the above criteria but are not necessarily involved in our core Residency Program. We see this as an opportunity to support two types of projects:
- Projects by artists that we would eventually like to invite into Residency (who have an affinity with our mandate) but with whom we are, as yet, unfamiliar.
- Projects with similar approaches to those in Residency but that are more suited to working outside the parameters of a creation unit.
