THE THEATRE CENTRE’S RESIDENCY PROGRAM

3500-tapes-quick-selection.jpg

Established in 2004, The Theatre Centre’s Residency Program supports 4 to 5 companies to create new work. Over a 2-year period, the artists are provided with space, funding and mentorship to explore and develop an idea in its infancy and to create new work that is both provocative and innovative.

The program was initiated to fill a niche in Toronto’s theatre community – to support projects that didn’t fit into the traditional creation models that already existed in the city. We were interested in attracting artists for whom space and active collaboration were the main creative tools. Residency provides space, relevant support, and consistency to a sector of new work creation that has often struggled with erratic, and haphazard working conditions. We felt it was time to give left-field, cutting-edge ideas mainstream support. In an environment where the cross-pollination of ideas i one of the main dramaturgical tools, common patterns of development methods have emerged. It has so far been a fascinating journey. Franco and I feel we are continuing The Theatre Centre’s rich history of fostering new work
Jennifer Tarver, Associate Director

Over the two years, Resident Companies will spend 3-week periods at The Theatre Centre to explore, develop and create their new projects. The 3-week periods take place in June-July, September and December. Private and public showcases occur throughout the program.
