Past Resident Companies
The following companies developed projects as part of The Theatre Centre’s Residency Program.
2008-2010
- Public Recordings - 300 TAPES (originally titled Fraction)
300 TAPES was developed in collaboration during the residency. It is now being produced by Public Recordings with Alberta Theatre Projects and The Theatre Centre and presented at The Theatre Centre in December 1-12, 2010. Click here for show information.
- Why Not Theatre - I’M SO CLOSE..
Why Not Theatre is a Toronto-based theatre company with an international scope. Under the Artistic Direction of Ravi Jain, Why Not Theatre developed their show I’m So Close… during the residency. This piece was then presented at The Theatre Centre in 2010 as part of the Free Fall Festival, in conjunction with harbourfront’s world stage, and in Vancouver at The Tremors festival.
- The Window Collective - OUT THE WINDOW
Toronto-based artist Liza Balkan used the residency period to explore a documentary theatre piece investigating the death of Toronto resident Otto Vass in August 2000. Out The Window was presented in a private workshop by Crow’s Theatre and The Theatre Centre in 2010.
2006-2008
- Die in Debt – PRESS
Founded by Sarah Stanley, Die in Debt developed a new piece called PRESS with Nick Carpenter during their residency.
- One Reed with Paul Thompson – never underestimate THE POWER
- Independent Aunties – BREAKFAST
Toronto-based theatre company Independent Aunties developed the critically acclaimed Breakfast during their residency. The piece went on to be co-produced at The Theatre Centre in 2008. In 2010 Breakfast was presented at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
- urbanvessel – STITCH
Toronto-based urbanvessel developed their a capella opera – featuring singers/performers Christine Duncan, Patricia O’Callaghan and Neema Bickersteth – during their residency. Stitch was later co-produced and presented by The Theatre Centre in 2008 as part of the Free Fall festival. It was presented again in 2010 at The Theatre Centre.
- Nation of Aslan - JAZZ BRACKETS
2004-2006
- Mammalian Diving Reflex – DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITIES
Conceived and directed by Darren O’Donnell, Diplomatic Immunities was developed in residency. It was presented at Buddies in Bad Times in 2007.
- Hum/Susanna Hood – SHE’S GONE AWAY
Toronto-based choreographer Susanna Hood developed a new creation She’s Gone Away during the residency. It later premiered at The Theatre Centre in 2006.
- Bluemouth inc – HOW SOON IS NOW
Developed in residency by Toronto-based Bluemouth inc, How Soon is Now was later co-presented with The Theatre Centre at Dupont Lofts.
- Volcano Theatre – THE FOUR HORSEMAN PROJECT
Conceived and co-directed by Kate Alton and Ross Manson, The Four Horsemen was developed in residency. It was then presented to great acclaim at The Factory Theatre, garneering 4 Dora Awards, and later at the PuSh Festival.
- Princess Productions - PAPER WOMEN
Paper Women was developed in residency by Yvonne Ng, mixing text, movement, music and percussion.
